On 3 May 2023, the Faculty of Divinity hosted the inaugural lecture of Professor Esra Özyürek, Sultan Qaboos Professor of Abrahamic Faiths and Shared Values and the Academic Director of Cambridge Interfaith Programme.

Introducing the lecture, Professor Richard Rex (a historian of the English Reformation) characterised Özyürek's work as 'table-turning', bringing us to look at the world from new angles and in unexpected ways. The lecture itself provided an outline of Professor Özyürek's new book, Subcontractors of Guilt: Holocaust Memory and Muslim Belonging in Postwar Germany (Stanford University Press, 2023).

The event took an unusual format, with three invited discussants offering reflections on the significance of Subcontractors of Guilt, with reference to their own working contexts and disciplines. There was also an opportunity for audience questions (rare at such events).

Those providing prepared reflections were Sarah Colvin (Schröder Professor of German, Cambridge), David Feldman (Professor of History and Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism, London) and Michael Banner (Dean & Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge).
