An anthropologist among Old Firm football fans
Dr Joseph Powell chairs round two in the Footnotes: Writing of Football series, exploring interactions of football and faith. This session hears from Joseph Webster, Professor of the Anthropology of Religion at the Faculty of Divinity.
Faith and football in anthropological perspective
Webster has written extensively on protestant groups in Scotland: The Anthropology of Protestantism (2013) focused on Exclusive Brethren, while The Religion of Orange Politics (2020) examines the Orange Order communities.
Such fieldwork exposed Webster to dynamics surrounding football in Scottish Protestantism, and he was invited to contribute as an expert witness in support of the repeal of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.
Join Powell & Webster to consider what it means to observe and engage with football anthropologically, with reflections from across his research career.
