Faculty of Divinity Launches New Inter-faith Undergraduate Course

last modified Oct 07, 2014 08:54 AM
New undergraduate course will focus on inter-faith encounters in the First Millennium...

An exciting new course, taught by the Sultan Qaboos Professor of Abrahamic Faiths, Garth Fowden, is aimed at introducing third-year undergraduates in the Divinity Faculty to the study of First Millennium Judaism, Christianity and Islam in all their historical and intellectual interactions. The course is set against the background of the great empires of late Antiquity: Sasanid Iran, Rome and the Arab Caliphate. Particular attention will be given to the development of scripture-based exegetical communities and the cultivation of rational approaches to exegesis in order to bridge the dogmatic gap. For further information on the course see here. You can also buy Professor Fowden’s latest book: Before and after Muḥammad: The First Millennium Refocused (Princeton 2014).
