Scriptural Reasoning Online

The Cambridge Inter-Faith Programme has launched an exciting new web platform for inter-faith Scriptural Reasoning conversations.

Be part of it! Scriptural Reasoning Online has been running since early 2012 and we welcome participation from members of the public. Are you interested in being part of a small group discussing religious texts, using the new web platform?

Scriptural Reasoning is a practice fostered by the Cambridge Inter-faith Programme in which Jews, Christians and Muslims gather in small groups to read their sacred scriptures together, often around a common theme. It has proved a great opportunity for participants to engage in in-depth conversations, to discover more about their own Scriptures and those of other faiths, and to build lasting friendships.

The new web platform offers an opportunity for many more people to learn more about Jewish, Christian and Muslim Scriptures, to go deeper into their own faith tradition and to develop friendships with other people. Scriptural Reasoning online operates without the constraints of time and place, so users will potentially connect with people from all over the world. All that users need is access to the internet and the willingness to devote a small amount of time to the discussion, for a limited period. Groups typically run for between one and four weeks, and will be facilitated by an experienced 'reasoner' from the Cambridge Inter-faith Programme. Taking part is free and no qualifications or previous experience are needed. To find out more about Scriptural Reasoning Online, contact Rim and Hilary at SRonline@interfaith.cam.ac.uk.

What the users say

I enjoyed Scriptural Reasoning online a lot; it pushed me to look deep into the text and research meanings of many words in the three scriptures. It also triggered a genuine interest in reading the Old and New Testaments and compare them with the Quran.

A chance to interact with some interesting people whom I would not otherwise meet. It gave me a glimpse of Jewish and Islamic ways of interacting with scripture.

Research in the Wild

We have received funding from the Research Councils UK Digital Economy Programme – specifically from the Research in the Wild competition – to develop this technology, offering it to a wide and non-academic audience, and to refine both the platform and our understanding of the process as we do so.
